Syndromic hearing loss is when the hearing loss occurs alongside other medical conditions. This condition affects about 30% of people with genetic hearing loss. Over 400 syndromes are linked to syndromic hearing loss, each varying in their severity and symptoms. These conditions arise due to specific gene mutations that influence both hearing and other body parts.

Non-syndromic hearing loss comes with no additional medical issues. This version is the more common type, accounting for roughly 70% of all genetic hearing loss cases. Non-syndromic hearing loss can vary in severity from mild to profound and can affect one or both ears.

  • DFNX genes are associated with X-linked inheritance, primarily affecting males as the DNA variant is on the X-chromosome.

One of the most common genes associated with hereditary hearing loss is the GJB2 gene. This gene, linked to recessive inheritance, produces a protein crucial for cochlear function. Another common gene is the STRC gene, also classified under recessive inheritance, which is essential for the structure and function of hair cells in the cochlea.

Some inherited genes have been identified to be the catalyst for hearing loss later in life. One known example is the DFNA10 gene, which is categorized under dominant inheritance.
